Travax

Travax logoTRAVAX® is an interactive online website providing up to the minute travel health information for healthcare professionals. TRAVAX® is maintained and continually updated by the Travel Health Team of Health Protection Scotland (HPS). It is provided as a NHS resource for healthcare professionals who advise clients about avoiding illness when travelling abroad.

Information on this website reflects the consensus views of the TRAVAX® Advisory Board made up of medical and nursing experts from different specialties (e.g. Travel and Tropical Medicine, Infectious Diseases, General Practice, Occupational Health, the Armed Forces), the Advisory Panel on Malaria Prevention (ACMP) for the United Kingdom which is managed by the Health Protection Agency (HPA) and advice from the Joint Committee on Vaccinations and Immunisations for the United Kingdom (JCVI).

Information is easily accessible via four drop down menus: destinations, immunisations and travel related infections, malaria prevention and advice sheets.

Destinations

Details for every country in the world are available with each country record providing general health advice, information on immunisation requirements, malaria prevention (including, where relevant, maps indicating malaria risk areas), other infection risks specific to the destination, medical services and other current information.

Immunisation and other travel related infections

As well as TRAVAX® having information on the British National Vaccination Schedule there are also details on international vaccination schedules, vaccination procedures, vaccination certificates and vaccination in special circumstances. Also provided is information (e.g. cause, distribution, clinical features, prevention, etc.) a large number of travel related infections that travellers may encounter ranging from Amoebiasis to Yellow fever.

Malaria prevention

Advice about malaria is comprehensive, including prevention and chemoprophylaxis, diagnosis, treatment, and emergency standby treatment.

Advice sheet

The sheets give practical advice for various groups of travellers, from backpackers to volunteers, on ways to stay healthy on holiday. There are also advice sheets on other health issues that affect travellers such as accident prevention, insect bites and mountain sickness. This printable resource enables travellers to leave with advice sheets relevant to their travels.

Risk assessment

TRAVAX® allows travel advisors to make sound risk assessments for their travelling patients enabling patients to receive reasoned advice on vaccinations and malaria chemo-prophylaxis. Not only does TRAVAX® provide advice on making sound risk assessment it also has exercises in risk assessment. There are also guidelines for setting up travel medicine services.

Navigation bar

As well as the drop down menus there is a navigation bar to help users quickly access other resources on the database. Some of these buttons are alternative to using the drop down menus to access TRAVAX's information.

  1. Outbreak Index an index for the current two months of important outbreaks together with a complete archive of previous outbreaks.
  2. Vaccine Information an alternative way of accessing the information on vaccinations.
  3. Map Resources allows users to view country records by selecting the country from the detailed maps.
  4. Conferences provides information on current travel health courses and conferences.
  5. Books and Literature a list of available literature for travellers, health care professionals and specialist traveller.
  6. Useful Web Links provides links to other travel health related websites.
  7. Education and Training details of the current travel medicine education and training options.
  8. Discussion Forum to allow users to give advice and exchange information with each other.
  9. A to Z Index comprehensive listing of all information contained in TRAVAX®.

Registration

Only registered users can have access to the information on TRAVAX® via a user name and password. To register complete the online registration request form at http://www.travax.nhs.uk and you will receive your TRAVAX® user name and password within a few days.

TRAVAX® is funded by the Scottish Government Health Directorate and the service is therefore free of charge to all using the service for NHS purposes in Scotland. There is a token charge for NHS users in other parts of the United Kingdom (e.g. £100 per annum for Health Centres). Primary Care Trusts (£1000 per annum) and Health Authorities in other parts of the United Kingdom can take out a group subscription practices or regions. There are special rates for Private Clinics.
