Health Protection Advisory Group

To monitor how well the new arrangements are protecting the health of Scotland and to advise on the quality and appropriateness of health protection plans and services, a Scottish Health Protection Advisory Group will be established with a remit to:

advise the Chief Medical Officer and National Services Scotland on matters relating to health protection and on the effectiveness and efficiency of the health protection function in Scotland and to support the establishment and ongoing corporate development of Health Protection Scotland by:

  • advising on a strategic framework and priorities for health protection;
  • assessing and advising on major risks to the public health, and associated risk perception and communication issues;
  • advising on the effectiveness of health protection-related emergency plans and major epidemic/pandemic plans;
  • advising on the capacity to prevent and respond to infection disease and environmental hazards, which present a risk to public health;
  • advising on research relating to support of the health protection function; and
  • producing an annual report

The membership of the group includes representatives from NHS Boards, local authorities, HPS, other national organisations with an interest in health protection (e.g. FSA) and relevant professional and staff bodies. It is envisaged that the results from quality assurance work carried out by HPS will initially go for perusal to the Health Protection Advisory Group. The Group will publish an annual report related to its remit which will be placed in the public domain.
