
HPS provides operational support and advice to health professionals
and other agencies on aspects of food safety. HPS carries out surveillance
of notifiable diseases that occur in Scotland, which includes foodborne
illness. Data are also gathered on laboratory isolates of organisms
responsible for gastro-intestinal disease from NHS laboratories throughout
Scotland. These activities serve to identify trends in foodborne disease
and outbreaks.
