Guidance for the Public Health Management of Infection with Verotoxigenic Escherichia coli (VTEC) 22 Feb 2013

The guidance provides easily accessible advice based on evidence, or expert concensus, on the public health management of cases, groups of cases, and contacts of suspected, probable and confirmed verotoxigenic Escherichia coli (VTEC) infection.

This guidance is aimed at those involved in the public health management of VTEC in Scotland including General Practitioners, front-line hospital staff, Consultants in Public Health Medicine, Microbiologists, Environmental Health Officers, and Health Protection and Infection Control Nurses. It may also be of interest to paediatricians and infectious disease physicians.

To support the guidance a Quick Reference Guide has also been prepared.

The second edition (published 2013) includes more detail on exclusion and microbiological clearance.

Two extracts from the VTEC Guidance can also be downloaded for easy use:

  • Extract 1 - An algorithm on diagnosis and initial testing for VTEC, for use by GPs and front-line hospital staff in particular.
  • Extract 2 - An algorithm for determining exclusion and microbiological clearance, to assist local risk assessments by Health Protection Teams in particular.
