Antimicrobials is a term used to describe antibiotics and other medicines. Used appropriately, antibiotics are valuable and effective treatments for fighting infections.
Antibiotic resistance arises when bacteria evolve and develop traits which enable them to survive exposure to medicines that would normally kill them.
Misuse of antibiotics has lead to a rise in antibiotic resistant infections in recent years.
Without effective antibiotics, serious infections cannot be treated. It is essential to preserve our remaining antibiotics.
One way of doing this is to ensure antibiotics are only prescribed and used when necessary.
HPS is working with stakeholders across Scotland to contribute to the control of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in Scotland. In particular, HPS is engaged with partners in the human and animal health, research, industry and academic sectors.
