Surgical Site Infections (SSI)

Surgical Site Infections (SSI) arise when sufficient microorganisms enter the surgical site during the procedure to overwhelm the host's natural defence mechanisms.

Microorganisms can originate from the patient's skin, dispersed from HCWs in the operating theatre, unsterile instruments, or via the blood when the patient has a pre-existing infection.

The SSHAIP team can facilitate the addition of the bundle criteria onto the existing surveillance forms for hip arthroplasty and caesarean section procedures.

Please email all requests to NSS.HPSSSHAIPdata@nhs.net
