Occupational Needlestick Injury

Occurrence and prevention of occupational needlestick injuries within NHSScotland with particular reference to the role of safety devices.

A "needlestick" is one of the most common types of injury to be reported by NHSScotland staff, with an estimated 2,400 incidents being recorded annually (Survey 1999, SEHD). The Scottish Executive's Short Life Working Group Report "Needlestick Injuries: Sharpen your Awareness", published in 2001, highlighted both the lack of comprehensive epidemiological data in relation to needlestick injuries and the limited data available with regard to safety device use within NSScotland.

A prospective survey was coordinated by HPS with the support of NHS Occupational Health Departments to address the issues raised in the report.
