What are Transmission Based Precautions (TBPs)?
TBPs, in addition to Standard Infection Precautions (SICPs) are a set of measures that should be implemented when patients are either suspected or known to be infected with a specific infectious agent. TBPs are categorised according to the most common route of transmission of the infecting agent such as droplet, contact and/or airborne.
These policies are designed to be used in conjunction with other initiatives and activities already underway in many local and national settings. Those using them should take account of the other pieces of work they are directed to within the literature reviews and policies, and also take account of local situations.
It is the responsibility of individuals who choose to utilise these Policies to apply them appropriately at local level and to ensure the version they are working from is the most up to date. The Policies will be reviewed on a 3 yearly basis, however, if significant findings are made in relation to a subject throughout the course of the year changes may be made.
These documents are available in PDF format. The policies can be provided in MS Word format if required. Please email NSS.HPSInfectionControl@nhs.net to make any requests.
