Scottish Surveillance of Healthcare Associated Infection Programme (SSHAIP) Annual Report 2001/02 01 Apr 2003

Health Department Letter (2001)57 ‘A Framework for National Surveillance of Hospital Acquired Infection in Scotland’ required trusts to undertake surveillance of healthcare associated infection (HAI) between 2002 and 2004. Acute trusts were required to provide data on methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus infection and reports on these data were to be published. Acute trusts were required to put structures in place to collect data on Surgical Site Infection (SSI) following selected procedures, including neurosurgical procedures, and to provide these data for national reporting in 2003.

The Scottish Centre for Infection and Environmental Health (SCIEH) was funded to facilitate and coordinate the programme of national HAI surveillance. The Scottish Surveillance of Healthcare Associated Infection Programme (SSHAIP) team was established at SCIEH to undertake this task

This first annual report from the SSHAIP team covers the period from its inception to December 2002.
