10 Jun 2011 One Case of E. coli O104 in Scotland

One case of E. coli O104 associated with the ongoing outbreak in Germany has been identified in a patient in Scotland.

The patient, who has recently travelled to Germany, has not been admitted to hospital and has not developed HUS*. HPS will not release any further information on this patient.

*Haemolytic-uraemic syndrome (HUS) is a disorder that usually occurs when an infection, usually E. coli, in the digestive system produces toxic substances that can get into the blood stream and cause kidney disease.
