Reference Laboratories

Health Protection Scotland has responsibility for commissioning of Reference Laboratory Services for NHS Scotland.

Scottish National Reference Laboratories provide support to guide the clinical management of individual patients. They also provide an analytical and advisory service to the NHS and Health Protection Scotland, which collects epidemiological data for public health purposes. Each laboratory maintains an archive of samples that contributes to research, quality assurance, audit and teaching. Front-line diagnostic testing is undertaken in local laboratories and is not centrally funded.

HPS are supported in this role by National Services Division and the Reference Laboratory Working Group.
