The period of intensive Influenza surveillance for 2011/12 is now finished. This is the third of our monthly bulletin reports over the summer period. It provides an update on influenza and other viral respiratory pathogen activity for the month ending 12 August 2012. Over the summer (weeks 21-39) an influenza update report will be published every 4 weeks unless influenza (or other viral respiratory pathogen) activity increases significantly.
This report contains summary epidemiological information on influenza-like illness (ILI) and other viral respiratory pathogen activity and provides a continuing commentary on any potential resurgence in clinical activity from influenza and any other respiratory viruses over the summer period.
The GP consultation rate for influenza-like illness (ILI) has been calculated using a different method than at the same time point last year. Please refer to the technical document for further information on this.
As expected for this time of year in Scotland, clinical and virological influenza activity is low overall. Levels of non-influenza viral pathogens are in line with expected seasonal levels, with the exception of rhinovirus, parainfluenza virus and adenovirus reports from non-sentinel sources which are slightly above the levels seen at the same time last year.
