This is the seventh monthly report of the 2011/12 influenza season. For this season, we will provide detailed influenza update reports on a monthly basis with bulletin style weekly updates in the weeks in between.
This report contains summary epidemiological information on influenza-like illness (ILI) and acute respiratory illness (ARI) activity, its severity and impact in the community and secondary care settings, and vaccine uptake estimates.
The GP consultation rate for influenza-like illness (ILI) has been calculated using a different method this season. Please refer to the technical document for further information on this.
Due to the recent holiday period some of the data sources described in the report will be based on provisional or adjusted data. Interpretation of this week’s data should therefore be with caution until more complete data becomes available.
Clinical influenza activity remained below the threshold for normal seasonal activity over the last four weeks. Virological influenza activity reported through the GP sentinel system fluctuated over recent weeks, whilst the activity reported through non-sentinel sources (ECOSS) started to decline slightly. Levels of non-influenza seasonal viral pathogens were in line with expected levels. RSV activity was lower than at the same time last year. The number of adenovirus infections reported increased, with levels higher than at the same time last year.
