To monitor the incidence of Invasive Pneumococcal Disease (IPD) and the impact pneumococcal vaccination (polysaccharide vaccine) for the elderly (over 65s) and those entering the childhood immunisation schedule, eligible for pneumococcal (conjugate) vaccination. Vaccine policy development and evaluation of the impact of policy implementation require baseline information on the epidemiology and strain distribution of pneumococcal disease.
