Surveillance Data & Systems
The risks to human health are changing all the time. Our information gathering
operation is essential to maintain up-to-date information on trends in a wide
range of diseases and environmental hazards. The collection of accurate and
timely data lies at the heart of HPS’s operations and underpins all of our
activities in protecting the health of the Scottish population. This involves
close collaboration with a network of public health professionals and
specialist agencies at local, national and international level.
Data is provided though an extensive surveillance network which encompasses
laboratories, hospitals, General Practitioners, NHS boards and local authority
departments, in addition to surveillance centres in Europe and around the
world.
The collection of data from laboratories has been streamlined in recent years
and HPS is collaborating with other organisations to develop electronic systems
which automate the capture of surveillance information.
