Body piercing and tattooing

Background

On 1 April 2006, the Civic Government (Scotland) Act 1982 (Licensing of Skin Piercing and Tattooing) Order 2006 came into force in Scotland. The Order was subsequently amended in late 2006 and gives local authorities the power to license people who carry out skin piercing or tattooing as a business. The Order lists a number of requirements related to key issues aimed at reducing, if not removing, risks to public health from body piercing and tattooing.

We provide advice to stakeholders on potential risks associated with individual practices. Additionally, an implementation guide to assist local authorities in implementing the Order has been produced in collaboration with the Royal Environmental Health Institute for Scotland (REHIS).
