Every year, Health Protection Scotland wholeheartedly supports the World Health Organisation’s Hand Hygiene Day and this year sees the annual Healthcare Associated Infections (HAI) Annual Report published on the same day (Friday 5 May).
Health Protection Scotland is supporting the World Health Organisation (WHO) ‘Clean your hands’ campaign which focuses on antibiotic resistance with the theme of ‘Fight Antibiotic Resistance – it’s in your hands’.
To further support this campaign, we have published our HAI Annual Report which details the latest figures on healthcare associated infections. These continue to represent a threat to patient safety across Scotland and to safe care, wherever that is delivered. The threat of antimicrobial resistance remains a key focus for current and future health protection strategies.
There will be activities going on at the Health Protection Scotland headquarters in Glasgow where staff will be given the chance to see just how good they are at hand hygiene using ultraviolet rays to show up any spots missed after washing their hands.
Professor Jacqui Reilly, Lead Consultant at HPS said: “Hand hygiene is the first line of defence against the spread of infections in healthcare settings. Preventing these infections helps to avert the need for unnecessary antibiotic use and this, in turn, helps to contain the threat of antimicrobial resistance. We are publishing our HAI annual report on WHO Hand Hygiene Day in support of the campaign and to demonstrate Health Protection Scotland’s commitment to the prevention and control of infections in all healthcare settings.
"The HAI annual report’s wealth of information includes highlighting the internationally recognised risk of antimicrobial resistance reporting trends in resistance observed among some bacteria causing HAI such as E. coli. Fight antibiotic resistance - it’s in your hands."
