The seventh annual World Polio Day takes places on 24 October 2019. Poliomyelitis is an acute enteroviral infection that mostly affects children under five years of age and in its most severe form the disease may result in permanent paralysis.

Since the Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI) was launched 30 years ago, the incidence of polio has fallen significantly. Polio cases have dropped by 99.9%, from 350,000 cases in 1988 in 125 countries to 33 cases of wild poliovirus in 2018 in just two countries, Afghanistan and Pakistan.

With polio nearly eradicated, the aim now is to sustain the progress made and ensure every child receives the polio vaccine.
