COVID-19 - risk areas

This page will indicate areas that are considered to be a risk for human-to-human transmission of COVID-19. This will aid in assessing any suspect cases as to further actions required.

If our understanding of COVID-19 changes then guidance will be updated. Always check this website to ensure that any guidance you are using is the latest version.

Risk area categories

Category 1 risk area

Travellers who have returned from or travelled through a Category 1 risk area should self-isolate at home for 14 days after return to the UK while asymptomatic. If symptoms develop immediately contact your GP or NHS 24 (111).

Category 2 risk area

Travellers who have returned from or travelled through a Category 2 risk area can go about their normal activities. If symptoms develop immediately contact your GP or NHS 24 (111).

Please note: the guidance for Italy, Iran, and Daegu or Cheongdo (South Korea) applies to individuals who returned from these specific areas on or after 19 February 2020.

    • ​all other areas in north Italy (defined by a line above, and not including, Pisa, Florence and Rimini) which are not Category 1
