Malaria Surveillance Guidance Notification/Reporting of Malaria in Scotland-HPS Scottish Malaria Oversight Group Effective 01/01/2013

This guidance sets out procedures and arrangements for the enhanced surveillance and reporting of malaria by NHS laboratories in Scotland responsible for the diagnosis of malaria parasites.

In general terms, this document is intended to clarify the diagnosis /confirmation/notification pathway for specimens from possible malaria cases submitted by clinicians for diagnosis. It should be read in conjunction with local guidelines/ SOPs for malaria diagnostic techniques: it is not intended to provide advice on diagnostic techniques.

This guidance covers the following areas: confirmatory tests; enhanced data collection; and notification.
